I’m not alone

The Friday before the season premiere of the new HBO series Treme, HBO bought a full-page ad in the NY Times and packed it with quotes from 4-star advance reviews. So I figured I’d give it a shot. About ten minutes into the premiere that Sunday night, I was out cold on my couch. I never bothered to watch the rest of that first episode, or any other one, as what I saw of the show had been such a snooze fest. Now it turns out I wasn’t alone. From the Wall Street Journal, “Is It Okay Not to Love ‘Treme’?”. Excerpt:

Television critics around the country were nearly unanimous in their praise for “Treme,” HBO’s new series about post-Katrina New Orleans. HBO renewed “Treme” for a second season only two days after its premiere last month, an unusual signal of early confidence in a new program. The show has been hailed for its exuberant musical performances and its authentic depiction of New Orleans.

But tentatively and in small numbers, some writers and journalists are making a confession: They don’t particularly enjoy the show.

Author Susan Orlean wrote on Twitter, “Forgive the blasphemy but I was underwhelmed by ‘Treme’.” Jordan Bartel, an editor for “b,” a free daily paper affiliated with the Baltimore Sun, tweeted, “Question I keep asking myself: is it OK not to completely love ‘Treme’?” Former correspondent for “The Daily Show” Rob Corddry posted on his Twitter feed: “Watching ‘Treme’ on HBO. I hope it’s as important as it is boring.”

  • I made it through two episodes but lost interest. Neither episode was bad, just uninteresting.
  • That was my impression from the little bit I saw of the first one. Maybe it's a result of Simon's naturalistic M.O.
