An Update on the accident mentioned in the previous post, via NJ.Com:
MOUNT OLIVE – A 25-year-old Andover Township police officer and a 19-year-old Missouri woman were killed early this morning when their 2008 Nissan pickup truck rolled over the median on Route 80 in Budd Lake, according to State Police.
Two Newton men were injured.
Brian Kern, a patrolman who joined the Andover Township police department three years ago, was driving west on Route 80 at 12:11 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, said Sgt. Stephen Jones.
The car flipped over on the median and rolled onto the eastbound side of the highway, where it came to rest upright.
Kern and the Missouri woman, who was sitting in the rear passenger seat, were ejected from the vehicle, Jones said.
The woman was not identified because police have not notified her family.
It is unclear if they were wearing their seat belts, Jones said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and Kern was pronounced dead at Dover St. Clare’s Hospital, Jones said.
“It is with great sadness and deep regret that we announce the passing,” said Phillip Coleman, chief of police for Andover Township, in a prepared statement.
The two 25-year-old men in the car who survived the accident were wearing seat belts, according to Jones, who did not know the extent of their injuries.
Ryan Caffrey was flown to Morristown Memorial Hospital, and Roger Skove was treated at the scene by the Mount Olive first aid squad.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Condolences to those who lost loved ones, but, connecting the dots, it appears that this accident was caused (at least in part) by a 25 year old off-duty cop driving recklessly fast (how fast do you have to be going to fly over a 3 foot high concrete median?), while not wearing a seat belt.
Setting a minimum age of 25 or 30 for applicants to police jobs would give more time for reckless prospective applicants to disqualify themselves from the selection process.
