Alex Chilton of Big Star passed away in New Orleans Wednesday. I don’t know if I ever heard any Big Star, but I remember the Replacements song about Chilton. From YouTube, here’s Paul Westerberg of the Replacements playing “Alex Chilton” at Irving Plaza in NYC, back in ‘96:
A commenter on YouTube writes,
dont even like big star that much..but thats a fucking proper tribute song right there.
.
Update: Paul Westerberg eulogized Alex Chilton in an op/ed in today’s New York Times, “Beyond the Box Tops” (HT: The Green Skeptic). Westerberg wrote,
The great Alex Chilton is gone — folk troubadour, blues shouter, master singer, songwriter and guitarist. Someone should write a tune about him. Then again, nah, that would be impossible. Or just plain stupid.
